About

Nityanand Haldipur is a flautist and a senior disciple of Padma Bhushan Smt. Annapurna Devi of the Senia-Maihar gharana. He was born in Bombay into a deeply spiritual family.

His first guru was his father, the late Shri Niranjan Haldipur, a senior disciple of the late Pt. Pannalal Ghosh. Over the next two decades he trained under the late Pt. Chidanand Nagarkar and Pt. Devendra Murdeshwar, the seniormost disciple of Pannalal Ghosh. After 1986, when Annapurna Devi, doyen of the Senia-Maihar gharana and daughter of Ustad Allauddin Khansaheb (Baba), the fountainhead of the gharana, accepted him as her disciple, his musicianship acquired new depth and maturity. He continues his advanced training under her, in the tradition that produced Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Pt. Ravi Shankar, Pannalal Ghosh and Pt. Nikhil Banerjee.

His dhrupad-ang alaps and jod in vilambit compositions are contemplative, while his drut renderings are lilting and rhythmically varied. His repertoire ranges from pure classical music to experimental fusion. He has performed at music conferences including the SAARC Festival and the Apna Utsav series. A Top Grade artist of All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan, he has participated in the National Programme of Music and the AIR Sangeet Sammelan, and his music is available on the Magnasound and Lineage labels. In 2010 he was given the highest award for his contribution to Indian classical music by the Sangeet Natak Academy, Govt. of India, New Delhi.
